Why Buy Direct From Me?

The other day I got an email from a lovely reader, who is also a huge audio fan, asking what the benefit is for me when she buys an audiobook directly from me.

Buying any format direct from me is great because I don’t have to give a cut of my royalties (plus an obscure download fee) to the retailers, but for audio specifically, I would like to make a case for bypassing the retailers.

We all agree that Abby Craden is amazing. And that quality has a price tag. I’m completely on board with that and I firmly believe that everyone should be paid fairly for their work.

I pay Abby with great pleasure because she nails it every time, and she’s worth it, but producing audio out of my own pocket is not cheap.

This is why I used to sell my audio rights to publishers like Audible Studios and Tantor. (FYI, this is also the reason why a lot of my audiobooks are not available from my web shop. I don’t have the rights to sell them directly.)

Let’s just say it’s a good thing Abby is so popular and the Bliss/Craden combo is appreciated by many, because I have to sell A LOT of copies to recuperate the production cost.

This is because some retailers (looking at you, Audible) take 80% of a sale/listen.

Yes, that means I only get 20% of the retail price, sometimes even less. For clarity: some retailers like Apple, Google, and Spotify do pay more fairly, although it’s still only about 40% of the retail price.

Don’t get me wrong.

Everyone should use the service/retailer they prefer and I’d rather get paid $0.64 (I’m not making this number up—I’m looking at it in my audio dashboard now) for a full listen and have someone enjoy my audiobook than not, but I got the question, so I’m answering it. And I figured some of you might be interested in this.

I also know that most of you are passionate about supporting indie writers like me and I really can’t thank you enough for that.

Beware: this book is rather steamy and hearing Abby read all that steaminess to you may cause redness in the cheeks and butterflies in the stomach!
